When anti-bigamy laws were enacted in 1882, many polygamist families moved to Mexico to escape persecution. This non-fiction account tells of life in Mexico, and the later exodus to Arizona during the time of Mexico’s Pancho Villa.
Contributor Notes:
Excerpts from the Introduction by Dorothy Fillerup Boyer I remember (Charles Richard Fillerup) as a quiet and gentle man with a bushy gray mustache. He was a kind man who would sometimes take me outside to see the baby pigs and calves. He always spoke in a quiet, calm voice and never seemed to be in a hurry. He sang Danish songs to me as I sat on his lap at the kitchen table and when I was three or four years old, he tried to teach me to count to ten in Danish. My goal with this book about (Charles Richard Fillerup) is to acquaint his descendants with: his roots; the child; the youthful student, eager to learn; the dedicated and innovative teacher at school, at home, in church and in the field; the thinker and philosopher; the devoted son, brother, son-in-law, husband and a father who set high standards of excellence for his children to follow. I have attempted to illustrate his quest for knowledge, industry, integrity and honesty with those he met and worked with and his respect for all individuals. He had an avid curiosity about nature and its effect on the environment and strove to help others to understand and adapt to their environment. This book is a compilation of family history stories, autobiographies, letters, journal extracts, biographies and tributes written by family members and friends . . . photographs . . . other material from books, news articles and the internet.
